Nu Skin™ Enterprises, Inc. is a global direct selling company that operates in more than 40 countries throughout North and South America, Asia and Europe. From its earliest days, Provo, Utah-based Nu Skin™ Enterprises sought to differentiate itself from the rest of the pack. Nedra and Blake Roney worked to bring Nedra’s idea to fruition — a skin care product line that contained only beneficial ingredients and no potentially harmful fillers — but finding someone to manufacture such a product proved challenging. "It was really difficult getting that first batch of product made, because we didn’t have any money," says Blake Roney, now Nu Skin™’s Chairman of the Board. "We were calling manufacturers asking them if they could make a product with all of these ingredients and they would say, ‘Nobody puts all those ingredients in their products because it would be so expensive.’ "

After much research, Nedra and Blake finally found a manufacturer willing to make the products — and ship them COD. But once the product was made, how were they going to get it into the hands of consumers? Enter fellow founders Steve Lund, Brooke Roney and Sandie Tillotson, who joined Nedra and Blake in the initial stages to help with product development, creating a marketing and distribution system and establishing a direct salesforce.

Nu Skin™ markets its products through a network of independent distributors. For purposes of this summary, an Active Distributor is a distributor who placed an order for products, promotional materials or services or renewed their distributorship during the most recent three-month period. In the United States, the Company had an average of 52,887 Active Distributors during 2006.

Anyone can start the business at Nu Skin™ Enterprises with only a minimal initial investment. It is the business that requires zero inventory and overhead costs. Risk is low but the return can be exponential.

There are two fundamental ways in which a distributor can earn compensation:
1. Through retail markups on sales of products purchased at wholesale prices; and
2. Through commissions (or bonuses) paid on one’s product sales and the sales of other distributors in one’s downline sales network.

Building a successful Nu Skin™ business takes time. It is not a get rich quick business, although many top networkers may tell you differently. They may also tell you that you should buy leads to build a successful business. If you are new to the network marketing industry, or new to buying leads, heads up.

You will have to call hundreds of leads to find one who is remotely interested. You need to have excellent telemarketing skills. You will need to take the abuse and rejection that you will receive from 90% of the people you call. You may be very good at telemarketing and rejection doesn’t bother you. Personally, I do not know many people who can say this, and even if you are good at clsoing leads, the majority of people are not, meaning your business will be difficult, at best, to grow in this way.

What about your downline? Realize that your entire downline is not customers but distributors just like you. Are they all going to buy leads and do this too? Nope.

I don’t buy leads. I buy customers. They cost each. Half of what the results of buying leads conversion cost without all the time spent. I don’t have to make any calls. I don’t get rejected. I do not have good telemarketing skills. I don’t need them. And when I buy customers, they appear in my downline with out any effort on my part. And the 10% of my downline that are distributors do the same thing. Man-O-man we are happy buying customers not leads!
